" FREQUENT WIND"

A fleet of four carriers, two with their normal complement of aircraft and two configured for helicopters, and support ships with 9th Marine Amphibious Brigade was hastily assembled and arrived off the coast of South Vietnam on 20 April. The Marine helicopters comprised thirty-four CH-53's of HMH-462 and -463, twenty-seven CH-46s of HMM-165, six UH-1E’s of HML-367 and eight AH-1J’s of HMA- 369, augmented by six CH-53’s of the 2ISt Special Operations Squadron and two ARRS HH-53’s of the US Air Force.

After considerable political prevarication, Operation 'Frequent Wind' got underway on the afternoon of 29 April with the insertion of a Marine security force to guard the principal extraction site at the Defense Attaché’s Office (DAO) compound, adjacent to Tan Son Nhut airfield.

Sometimes, our Air America friends would drop by.  They never stayed very long ...... but they really liked the food on the Blue Ridge.

Since you've seen this ...Now we got to Kill ya!!! TOP SECRET and ALL so sorry

There was only one guy with enough nerve to paint his helmet like this... but he was never behind the 8-ball... always in front of it. Courtesy Dave Routson

"LIFE ON THE ROCK"

Capt. Mike Delong  Why is this Maintenance Officer smiling? He just talked the pilot into promising to take care of his aircraft. Photo: Courtesy Stephen Hornberger

Major Culwell, the Maintenance Officer doing some maintenance on his brain bucket. He must not have particularly wanted his picture snapped this day, but then, a maintenance officer NEVER smiles......1975  Photo: Courtesy Stephen Hornberger

I was still young and naive.  I used the bus system!  My next tour I made sure that I got a really fine rust bucket (covered in bondo, of course!). Photo: Courtesy Stephen Hornberger

This is a shot taken in a small LZ near Camp Hansen.  Besides having "fun" using the LZ, I figured that it would be a good place for a good "shot" too.  1stLt Stirrat was my Co-pilot for this flight on 22 Oct. 1975  151878 Photo: Courtesy Stephen Hornberger

The  photo is of Carrier Qualifications, July 8, 1975. VT-16 155340. Note that the landing direction is a little backward. But then also notice that there is no wake. Hmmmm, I wonder if its DIW? The Pilot instructor) is probably the XO, Maj. Lee. Photo: Courtesy Stephen Hornberger
